What it does

The Desktop Tapping Arm, in three points

  1. Square threads

The arm keeps the tap at 90 degrees, which cuts the side load that snaps small taps.

  2. Chuck for M2 to M10

A three-jaw chuck of 1/16 to 3/8 in takes metric and SAE taps.

  3. Clamp or screw down

A C-clamp opens to 1.73 in for a quick setup. The base can also be screwed to the bench.

At the bench

Building a frame from 2020 or 4040 extrusion means tapping dozens of end holes. By hand, each one risks a crooked start. With this arm, the tap goes in straight every time. Clamp it to the bench, chuck the tap, connect your drill and run at low speed with cutting fluid. It taps down into a part on the table or sideways from the bench edge.

Check before you buy

  • Your taps are between M2 and M10, or #2 and 3/8 in.
  • You have a hand drill with a low speed.
  • Your bench edge is 1.73 in thick or less, or you can screw the base down.

Limits

Pick another one if

It is a jig for aluminum profiles and light work. It is not a tapping machine, and it has no torque clutch. Hold the drill with both hands and let the tap cut. It is also the odd one out in a woodworking catalog, bought mostly by people building printer and CNC frames.

Base and arm are very stout, spindle has small wobble

Arm is very robust, I actually purchased it for my thead inserts for my 3D prints. The only reason why I didn't give it 5 stars is there's a little wobble in the drill spindle that could cause issues for those who want to tap 4-40 or M2 bolts. For my application I'm removing this spindle and making something to hold my soldering iron.

    It works!

It is a good rig once you understand how to use it properly. If you have the tooling you can also extend the reach by making your own arms.
